Apple’s iPhone availability site, which appears when there’s a shortage of iPhones in stores, reappeared this Friday. It might be just a clever marketing ploy, but in certain US states, certain models of the new iPhone 3GS are getting very hard to find.

For example, in Delaware’s only store you can only buy the white 32 GB iPhone 3GS. In Florida, Illinois and Minnesota, the majority of the stores are out of the white 16 GB model (which, according to this tool, is arguably the most popular flavor of the new iPhone). In Michigan, all stores are completely out of that same model.

In Mississippi, you can only buy the black 32 GB model, and in Kentucky, which has only one store, you cannot buy the new iPhone 3GS at all. It seems that those fabulous opening weekend numbers weren’t just a temporary fad; Apple is selling a lot of the new iPhones, and perhaps they can’t even stock up enough to satisfy the consumer demand.

As long as the availability site is up, we can monitor how quickly Apple is replenishing its stock; in the meantime, if you’re planning on buying the iPhone 3GS, especially the white 16 GB variety, hurry up. Oh, yes: if you’re satisfied with a good old iPhone 3G, don’t worry – there’s plenty of those in all Apple stores.
